I’ve put together an extensive list of Halloween costumes related to board games and video games, but I’ll soon expand this to include costumes related to card games and sports as well.
Why have we launched this section of Funtober? Good question. The past decade has seen a resurgence of games in American society. Between the reinvigoration of board and card games through the internet, and the rising popularity of first video game systems and then mobile gaming, the games we love to play have wrestled the attention of our nation away from cable television programming. It was inevitable that Americans would request Halloween costumes related to their favorite games. And so this section with game costumes was born.
Inevitably, we find ourselves facing the timeless question: “What costume should I wear this year?” And every year, there are two or three costumes that speak to a majority of the nation. They are generally costumes related to something in pop culture that everyone can relate to at the same time. Maybe they are related to a recently released movie or a television show. They probably haven’t been worn any other year.
Last year, I thought that the angry bird costume would be one of those costumes for adults and kids alike. With tens if not hundreds of millions of people in the world running around playing Angry Birds on their cell phone or tablet, it seemed likely that there would be quite a few people launching themselves from homemade sling shots at Halloween parties this October. It’s much more popular than Jersey Shore or Lady Gaga, and those costumes were smash hits in their inaugural costume season in 2010.
Part of the reason that game costumes like Angry Birds, as well as Super Mario Brothers, Sudoku, Street Fighter and Twister before it, are popular at Halloween is that they are fun, instantly recognizable, and encourage interaction with new friends and old. I can’t imagine that you won’t have people wrestling the darts away from you and throwing them at you while you are wearing a dartboard costume. And if you are wearing one of the angry birds costumes, I can’t imagine you will find it hard to plunge your way into a group of strangers, claim that it was the result of a slingshot, and then not get a few laughs! You will also find that game costumes make great costume ideas for groups and couples.
