GLORY DAYS OF THE RAILROAD 2018 UPDATE: It is with deep regret that I announce that this year's Glory Days of the Railroad Festival has run into a significant issue in getting equipment to the event. Unfortunately for those of us who have put much time and effort into the event, several dominos have toppled in recent weeks, limiting the ability to get equipment to this year's event. There is certainly no blame to place as the railroads involved each year graciously provide the equipment and cooperation to get it to White River Junction, typically as a favor that I return in photo work. This year, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation bridge project on Interstate 91 at Bernardston, MA, will take the Pan Am route out of service that is required to get and return their equipment, as well as is used by Amtrak. Unfortunately with that bridge out of service starting this evening through Monday morning, Pan Am's Mr. Patterson and Mr. Fink have decided that the equipment planned for the event (was FP9s PAR1 and 2, plus cars ST 100, 101 and 102) will not be attending due to the possibility of being stuck here when they are needed in another distant location on Monday morning. Likewise, Amtrak's use of a special heritage locomotive for the weekend was called off after it was determined that the Vermonter would be unable to run on Saturday and Sunday, due to the bridge outage. Central Maine & Quebec is extremely power short at the moment and that is a good thing from the railroad aspect, but bad from our perspective as it does not allow any units to be freed up for the event. Vermont Railway, our staple and old faithful partner, will be providing equipment for the weekend rides, however it will be equipment on hand, as moving equipment back and forth between Bellows Falls and White River Junction requires time and money, both of which are at premium with VRS' passenger schedules forthcoming. New England Central/G&W is also EXTREMELY power short and will only be able to provide the normal power on hand at White River Junction, which will be the Buffalo & Pittsburgh GP40 #3000 and NECR (ex-FEC) GP40-2 #437. There will still be lots of events and music, not to mention great food and miniature steam trains to view, but unfortunately this year will not be as diverse in equipment as we like. As of now, next year we should have a few neat visitors for the weekend, including a restored Boston & Maine switcher, perhaps some other never to WRJ before visiting equipment, and Mr. Fink/Patterson is committing the PAR Fs and OCS as well. CMQ should be in a better position for power next year so we hope to also have them attend. My apologies to all who were planning on attending, but know that we worked tirelessly behind the scenes to try and come up with solutions to get equipment here this year, just to no avail. Additionally the night photo session on Saturday night is canceled, sorry for any inconvenience. TRAIN RIDES will be going on as scheduled from the WRJ depot! ... See MoreSee Less

I haven’t been to this festival before but was considering coming this weekend. Will it just be vendors and the train ride this year? Trying to decide if it’s worth a 90 minute drive there with a toddler. Thanks

Would be nice to have a dinner train and another food vendor plus some model train vendors, based on previous years, going back 15 it was very busy of course the RR have changed ,was a time when you could take a spreader ride over the X C & C tracks up to the quarry and even had the C & C engine over on display. But thanks to a certain railroads mind set most likely not happen again, thank goodness I have my photos and rides to remember and my Speeder in the garage resting.
