About Scrabble
Scrabble was invented in 1938 by Alfred Mosher Butts, an architect that set out to create a game that took advantage of the popularity of crossword puzzles. He famously used the New York Times to conduct a frequency analysis to determine the number of tiles and point values for each letter. Although a few copies were sold, game manufacturers decided not to purchase it and the popularity of the game wouldn’t come until years later.
In 1949, James Brunot took over the game, changed some rules and gave it the name which would it would come to be known by millions. It received its big break when the President of Macy’s, Jack Strauss, played the game on vacation and ordered copies to be sold at his stores. Selchow and Righter purchased the game that year when Brunot and his employees were unable to keep up with demand.
The game stills sells between a million and two million copies each year. It was the source of a six year television game show in the 1980s and it is rumored to be the subject of an upcoming game show. The internet has actually increased the popularity of the game, as social networking and mobile applications have increased the number of word games played between friends.
