Maleficent is the villain in the 1959 Walt Disney movie Sleeping Beauty. She curses Princess Aurora to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die before sunset on her sixteenth birthday. Aurora’s third fairy godmother, Merryweather, uses her gift to modify the curse to a deep sleep.
The three fairies hide Aurora away as Briar Rose for sixteen years. But Maleficent finds her and lures her to prick her finger on a spindle. Her true love, Prince Phillip, is imprisoned by Maleficent to prevent the breaking of the curse. But he is freed by the fairies and breaks the curse on Princess Aurora with a kiss.
This is a slight rewrite of the character from the original version. In the fairy tale told by Charles Perrault, La Belle au bois dormant, she is a wicked fairy who is not invited to Aurora’s christening because she is believed to be dead or enchanted. Seven other fairies are invited to be her godmother and each given a golden casket. After six fairies present Aurora with their gifts, the wicked fairy, who is invited to participate but not given a golden casket, then curses Princess Aurora. The final fairy changes the curse to instead put Aurora in a deep sleep for a hundred years. After 100 years as the Sleeping Beauty, the enchantment is broken by a prince at her bedside.
In 2014, Maleficent will have her side of the story told by a Disney movie. Maleficent is directed by Robert Stromberg and Maleficent is played by Angelina Jolie. It will in part be a prequel to Sleeping Beauty, telling the story of a beautiful woman battling against an invading army. When she loses the battle after suffering a betrayal, she curses the newborn infant of the invading king’s successor.
