In 1916, Governor-elect James M. Cox was forced to book a room at Columbus’s Deshler Hotel when he couldn’t find adequate housing in the capital city. A formal governor’s residence didn’t exist at the time. That year, the Ohio General Assembly appointed a committee of former governors to finally secure an Executive Mansion. Located at 1234 E. Broad St. in Columbus, the home was designed by architect Frank Packard and sold to the state by clothier Charles Lindenberg. It was used by 10 Ohio governors until 1957, when a new governor’s residence was secured. The old Governor’s Mansion still stands in Columbus today and has since transitioned into the home of the Columbus Foundation.
