Mr. Potato Head was invented by George Lerner in 1949. It was manufactured by Hasbro starting in 1952. It was the first children’s toy advertised on television. The toy originally consisted of pushpins that were stuck into a real potato. However, due to concerns over rotting potatoes, plastic potatoes were added to the product to create the Mr. Potato Head that we all know and love. Mrs. Potato Head was a natural extension to the product line.
