Flappers refers to a young woman during the Roaring Twenties who flouted social and sexual norms. They worked outside the home, drove automobiles, drank and smoked while dancing and listening to jazz. They also became known for their style. Flappers eliminated hip and bust accentuating corsets from women’s fashion, prefering boyish looks, flattened breasts and straight waists. Dresses were straight and loose, with hemlines ending above the knee. Bobbed hair, heavy makeup and art deco jewelry became popular. The excesses of the Roaring Twenties and the Flapper lifestyle declined because of the Great Depression during the 1930s.
