The first Candy Striper program was established in East Orange General Hospital in New Jersey in 1944. A group of teenage girls in a civics class began volunteering at the hospital for a project. In order to distinguish themselves from the staff, they dressed in red and white striped jumpers which resembled a candy cane. Although the name has lost usage, the tradition of our nation's youth volunteering at hospitals has gained in strength.

Although candy stripers wore their uniforms to distinguish themselves from trained medical professionals and the hospital staff, you will fit right in with the other partygoers who dress in medical costumes on Halloween.
