Nest Thermostat 3rd Generation:

The 3rd Gen Nest Thermostat is the most advanced version of this smart home device. The Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) added a temperature sensor and maintained many of the classic features from the earlier Nest thermostats. When compared to the Nest Thermostat E (described below), it has a few additional features:

• It has greater compatibility with home heating and cooling systems.
• It has a 480 by 480 resolution display. It is also slightly bigger than the Nest E.
• It has the Farsight feature. This automatically wakes up the scren when there is activity within 20 feet and uses a large format display that is easier to read from across the room. It can show you the target temperature or time in a digital or analog clock view.
• It is available in standard black, white, silver and copper. The three new colors were added in Fall 2018. The Nest E is found in white plastic with a frosted display.

The 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat is regularly priced at $249 but can be found as low as $219.15 on Amazon and Walmart.

Nest Thermostat E:

The Nest E is the budget version of the Nest thermostat, released in 2017. You can turn it up or down from anywhere with remote control via your phone, tablet or laptop. It can tell you if there is a problem with your furnace or filters, as well as check your energy history to make cost saving efficiency suggestions. People using the energy-saving features have saved an average of 10 to 12 percent on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills, which yields an estimated average savings of $131 to $145 a year. The Nest Thermostat E is regularly priced at $169.

Size – The device has a diameter of 3.19 inches and a total width of 1.14 inches.

Power – It has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery and uses less than 1 kWh/month of power.

Language compatibility – It works with English, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish.

Installation – The Nest Thermostat E works with 85% of 24V heating and cooling systems. It is designed to work in homes without a common (c) wire, but isntalling a new C wire may be required. If you have a dual fuel system, professional installation is strongly recommended.

Included – It comes with the base, trim plate, screws, installation guide, display and Nest Thermostat E.

Differences – The Nest E is smaller, all-white and with a plastic cover. It was initially manufactured as a budget version of the Nest 3. The scren is frosted and stays blank until the motion sensor detects your presence, at which time it displays the temperature settings. The Nest E has a 320×320 resolution compared to the 3rd Gen 480×480 resolution. The E thermostat unless reportedly has some incompatability with multi-stage HVAC systems and doesn’t have the Farsight feature of the Nest 3.

Fourth Generation Device:

Google did not announce improvements to this product at IO so the 4th Gen appears to be on hold for now but it would not surprise us if one is released in time for Black Friday 2020.
