There are many ways to allow baby to safely play and explore their world, even when you aren’t directly playing with them. Whether baby is sleeping, playing, jumping, walking, teething, watching, or more, there are options that keep them safe and entertained while you do chores around the house, interact with other children, get some work done, or more. This Black Friday, find deals on playards, jumpers, bouncers, play mats, and more. These are all great ways to set baby down and get something done while allowing them the chance for independent play and physical activity.

As on other pages, we’ve been sharing the gear we chose for our son, born in September 2020. We were lucky to get much of the types of gear on this page from Rob’s brother, whose boys have outgrown them and were excited to pass them on to their baby cousin. We co-sleep per AAP recommendations on room-sharing, using the Guava Lotus bassinet next to my side of the bed. In a few months, we can switch the mesh frames and use the Guava as a playard, and it packs up into an impressively small backpack, making it easy to bring along while traveling (ah, remember travel? Thanks 2020…). In our living room, we have another playard/bassinet set up, which is where our little one often sleeps during the day while I work on updating festivals and other content for this site. It’s a Chicco Lullaby, and in addition to a removable infant bassinet, it has a changing table attachment and an organizer that snaps on the side, and the mattress pad can be washed (not all playards offer this option!) which I love because I can make sure that the clean goes beyond the sheet! We have a Fisher-Price play gym but so far we’ve only used it for tummy time. (I had my eye on the Lovevery play gym as well.) I also have plans to get this play mat for future playroom use, to encourage our little one to love travel as much as we do. We also received a music themed ExerSaucer jumper, which we’re sure our little one will love in a few months, given how much a good tune calms him down already! While we don’t have a swing, we did receive an Ingenuity Smart Bounce bouncer seat that bounces itself – which is magic I didn’t know I needed! (I had my eye on the BabyBjorn Bouncer since it’s so easy for older babies to bounce themselves, in addition to breaking down flat for travel and being easy to clean). Playards: Playards, such as the Pack n Play, allow baby to sleep, play, and more while safely contained in one area, allowing you to get things done around the house, work from home, or care for other children. Many playards have features like co-sleeping options, changing tables, mobiles, side openings, and easy portability, making them an ideal accessory not only at home, but for on the go or for a grandparent’s home or other destination.

Gyms and Play mats: Play mats and gyms usually feature a fabric bottom with an arm or two criss-crossing overhead, featuring a variety of interchangeable toys designed to grab baby’s interest and encourage reaching and interaction. Most mats and gyms also work well for “tummy time” and can even grow with baby to a sitting up stage or beyond.

Bouncers, Jumpers, and Walkers: Bouncers and jumpers encourage play and physical movement from baby, whether they’re kicking their feet to bounce the seat or flexing those leg muscles to jump up and down, and allow baby to observe the room (the safest place to put a bouncer is on the ground, not a table or other surface). While they fall into the same category as bouncers and jumpers, the AAP does not recommend using a walker, however, and has for years been calling for a ban on the piece of gear that sends thousands of young children to the emergency room each year. Walkers have been found to delay (not enhance) motor development. There are activity stations that feature a seat that swivels around a stationary center, allowing baby to move those footsies safely and to engage with the toys in front of them.

Swings: Swings also allow baby to be able to observe the room and provide a mobile and usually music for entertainment, but many babies find them very soothing and even a great place to catch a nap. Whenever baby is sleeping in a reclined position, be sure to have an eye on them and make sure the blankets and other gear stay out of their face and that nothing impedes their breathing.
